The Importance of Design

April 21st, 2011

Remember those dungy hallways lined with clanky metal lockers. It’s no wonder you counted down the days until your high school graduation, but your restless venturing spirit isn’t the only factor to blame for your angst. Problems plague secondary education in the United States. Over 1.2 million students drop out of high school each year. Their decision costs them $329 billion throughout their lives. During the first workshop session, Trung Le of Cannon Design proposes the solution to this reality lies within set up schools. We need to scrape the traditional classroom for a learning center to reenergize education. It all comes down to design. What other systems in our society need a second look? How could we redesign them to make them more efficient? In answering these questions, we must approach them with a positive mindset. It’s a rule of thumb for any endeavor. Le also suggests involving individuals across generations in the problem-solving process. Youth bring energy and creativity, while older generations have more experience and wisdom.
