Intensive training, effective collaboration, and expert guidance… sounds a bit like GES’s model for “creating a community of the next generation of global change leaders.” Now expand that to a 10-week summer institute where 25 young social entrepreneurs undergo rigorous and practical training including personal & entrepreneurial skill development, intensive collaboration & work-shopping, and involved guidance from mentors. Their model: attract social entrepreneurs, unite and incubate them, finance their endeavors. Another perk of the institute is that they provide website design & development, premier research access, and free legal consultations. Each Unreasonable Fellow will graduate the Institute with a viable business plan that is purposeful, sustainable, scalable, and replicable. At the end of the ten weeks, they will connect our 25 Fellows with the start-up capital and global network of support needed to give their ventures wings.

So what does all this mean for you? Well… the outcomes team is pleased to announce our official pipeline partnership with the organization behind this social entrepreneur incubator, The Unreasonable Institute. Imagine being part of the GES experience for 10 weeks! I can’t imagine what will come out of the institute and how greatly this will benefit the 25 social entrepreneurs selected to attend. As they describe on their website, “Pipeline Partners help us to attract and enable the worlds’ boldest and most brilliant young social entrepreneurs. In partnership with these organizations we are working to give their most unreasonable entrepreneurs the opportunity to apply for the Institute. Furthermore, many organizations below are dedicated to giving Unreasonable Fellows valuable opportunities post the Institute.”

More exciting outcomes to come! Stay tuned!

Sanitary pads are leaving the realm of Kotex commercials, hushed women’s conversations and the deep recesses of purse pockets. For women in Uganda, they have become the difference between hope and desperation.

Tune in for today’s “The Oprah Winfrey Show” as Oprah delivers a call to action for all women. Inspired by the New York Times best-selling book “Half the Sky” by Pulitzer Prize winners Nicholas Kristof and his wife, Sheryl Wudunn, this eye-opening hour reveals powerful stories of women overcoming adversity to realize a better life for themselves. Oprah herself calls one of the stories “the most incredible story of manifesting a dream I have ever heard.”

In conjunction with the show, Oprah will launch a new registry online at www.oprah.com/forallwomen, where the Kasiisi Project will be featured. Tune-in to the “Oprah” show this Thursday to hear Oprah’s call to action and to see how we can actually change the course of history in our lifetime. (Check local listings)

So what does this mean for MakaPads? The completely biodegradable sanitary pads, made from papyrus and white paper waste donated from local businesses are more than just a panty-liner. They provide jobs for women in slums of Kampala and at a refugee settlement that in turn, allows them to spend money on their children’s education and keep their daughters in school even when it is that time of the month.

“Oprah’s support of the project on GlobalGiving provides a promising push for Kasiisi Project to soar,” Alice says, “and as told at GES… this latest connection could provide for me the impetus to successfully ‘do good well.’”
